“We should always treat one another with courtesy and respect,” says New York City-based philanthropist and author Jean Shafiroff. “No matter where we stand politically, we must treat each other with dignity.”

Shafiroff leads by example. She first learned about the power of benevolence from her father, a music teacher, and her mother, an artist. Attending Catholic school for 12 years reinforced those early lessons on charity and kindness (though she adds that all world religions teach the importance of giving back to society).
